The California Chapter of the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America reminds you not to miss your “shot” at protecting yourself against the flu this season.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that the following groups get vaccinated each year: The elderly, young children, residents of long-term medical facilities and people who suffer from a chronic heart or lung condition, including asthma. If you have questions about whether you should get a flu vaccine, consult your health-care provider.
Complications from the flu can worsen chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, asthma and diabetes. If the flu is left untreated, children may get sinus problems and ear infections. The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by the influenza viruses. The virus spreads from person to person. Sometimes people become infected by touching something with the flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.
Every year in the United States more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications and about 36,000 people die from the flu. The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a vaccinated shot each fall. October or November is the best time of the year to get vaccinated. For information on low cost flu vaccinations in Los Angeles County call the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America at (800) 624-0044.
The Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) is the premier organization for those who suffer. AAFA is a non-profit voluntary health agency dedicated to improving the quality of life of people with asthma and allergies through education, advocacy and community outreach. For free literature on asthma and allergy management, call the Southern CA AAFA Chapter at (800) 624-0044.
